I took Lexi back to see Dr. Ally today for a weight check and to see what we could do for her. I was praying, praying, praying for a weight gain. Anything. When we got there, and weighed her, she had lost 1 oz. I was sick. I knew what that meant. I thought for sure we were going to walk out of that office today with a tube in her nose. Matt and I went through all kinds of scenarios while we were waiting for Dr. Ally. I was just devastated that I couldn't provide for my baby what she was needing.
When Dr. Ally came in, the first thing she said was "So are you ready for the NG tube?" I immediately responded, "NO!" So she told me I had two options. One was for Matt and I to go away for a long weekend and leave Lexi with a family member or for Matt to just take her away so her only option was to take a bottle. Since we don't have any family in the area that could take our baby, we decided that it would be best for Matt to take her out of town. Well, I'm not going to say I agreed totally with that decision, but I knew I needed to exhaust all my avenues before I was going to let Home Health come in and put a tube up her nose. Matt was more than thrilled because that meant he was going to get to take Lexi to Las Vegas the weekend that BSU plays UNLV. Something he's wanted to do forever. This was his chance and he was tickled. I was not. Then Dr. Ally suggested that SHE could take Lexi for us and try to get her to take the bottle. It was funny. I'm not sure if she was serious or not, but she was going through all kinds of scenarios as to how she could make it work. That right there is one of the many reasons I love our pediatrician. We chatted for a while, but came to the conclusion that this needed to be done. Matt had to take my sweet baby out of town, away from me in order to get her to gain weight. Seriously, a mother's worst nightmare. Dr. Ally did say that in her 25 years of practice, she has never seen a baby as stubborn as Lexi. Usually the baby will take a bottle after a day of two, but it doesn't usually come down to having to take the baby out of town. I think we are in for it when Lexi gets older. Heaven help us!
After the appointment, Matt decided it would be best for him to take Lexi out of town THIS weekend instead of next. I was actually ok with that because I was afraid that if she didn't take the bottle, and ended up in the hospital from dehydration, that I would be 5 hours away instead of 10 hours away. The plans were made and he was really going to do it. Dr. Ally said that it could take up to 24 hours and sometimes, 48 hours of crying before a baby will take a bottle. Oh, the thought of my baby crying for that long was sickening. But I knew with her dad, she would be fine. He was going to take good care of her. Lucky for me, I convinced him to take Mitch too because I had such a busy weekend.
Let this new journey begin!
